Driver- Set Up Reminders
Set up reminders:
1. Tee the ball high, so at least half the ball is above the top of the club head.
2. Make sure the ball is in line with the heel of your front foot.
3. Tilt your upper body away from the target. This helps you create a higher launch and will help you hit the ball further.
4. Make sure the handle of the club points just to the inside of your thigh or your first belt loop.
5. Many players stand too close to the ball with the driver. The driver is the longest club in your bag and you need space to swing it. From the top of the handle to your belt buckle, you should be able to fit the size of two fists when you are in your posture.
6. Another common mistake that players make is that they try to set the bottom of the club flush to the ground. That's wrong. Set the club head on its heel and then place your hands on the handle.
A lot of people say putting is the most important part of the game. I think driving is more important, because if you can't get the ball in play off the tee, you will never get to putt. Also, if your driver isn't going where you want it to, it can make golf very frustrating.
My most popular clinic topic is driving. I cover a lot in class, but here's a summary of things you can do to hit your driver better.
To hit the ball farther, one might want to explore the following avenues:
1. Check your set up. See above for a starting point. The driver has its own program, and will feel different than any other club.
2. Check where on the club you are making contact. You can do this by applying powdered foot spray. Get some at Target and keep it in your bag.
3. Check your swing dynamics. If your ball is going offline, is it your swing, alignment or a club face problem? Don't guess, because you might end up spending time on the wrong thing.
4. Measure your club head speed. Speed is a huge factor for all players. If all clubs in your bag go the same distance, you most likely have a speed issue.
5. Check your equipment. If your driver is more than five years old, it might be time for an upgrade.
