Chipping Basics
Today I thought I'd share a little bit about chipping. Chipping is a a short, low shot around the green. If you can chip the ball a little closer, you have a better chance of making the putt and avoid three-putting. Here comes a few bullet points:
Pre-swing
Grip the club lower on the handle so you have more control
Weight is distributed so you have 60-70% on your lead leg.
Shaft leans slightly forward.
Ball position is middle of your feet.
Your head, sternum and belly button are in line and over the ball.
If you have a tendency to hit behind the ball, check that your head & sternum are over the ball and not set behind like the photo on the right.
In-swing
The motion is almost like a putt with passive wrists. Your lead shoulder go down at the start of the motion.
The size of the swing is knee-high to knee-high.
Your finish position should have the club close to the ground.
Tempo is even with a slight acceleration.
A lot of students tell me this shot feels a bit "stiff" at first! After a while, you will be able to soften a little more. Please reach out if you have questions! I'd be happy to troubleshoot with you!
Keep swingin',
